How to clean uPVC window frames

Swain Brothers | Double Glazed Windows & Doors

Many of us use a trusted window cleaning company to clean our double glazing for us. But there are often occasions when you want to do it yourself. Maybe windy and wet weather has left marks on your windows, but the window cleaner isn’t due again for a few weeks. You could be having a summer BBQ and want the house looking at its best before guests arrive. Local birds may have flown over and left unwelcome deposits all over your frames and panes. Whatever the reason, when considering how to clean uPVC window frames, it is important that you know how to best care for your windows. This is so that you don’t cause any damage to them during the cleaning process.

Cleaning the inside of a uPVC window frame

Start cleaning the inside of the frame by opening the window as far as possible. Remove any loose dirt, debris, dust or dead insects using a soft brush or vacuum attachment. (Be very careful not to lean out too far when the windows are fully open. Also, keep children and pets secure during the cleaning process.) Remember to go over the hinges, run around the whole frame and get into all of the corners. Next, use a clean, soft cloth and warm water with a mild soap solution (such as washing up liquid) to clean inside the uPVC window frames. Be sure to avoid using any harsh cleaning products, as they can irreversibly damage the plastic.

Washing uPVC frames on the outside

With a bucket of clean, soapy water and soft sponge or cloth, carefully rub down the frames and window sills, making sure to get into all of the grooves and joints. Do not use scouring pads as they can scratch the surface of uPVC. For stubborn marks you can use a bit of gentle elbow grease. Leave them soak for a while and some back to it. In addition, you could use a dedicated uPVC cleaner. (Before using any new cleaner, even if it says it is suitable for use on uPVC, always test it first on a small, hidden area of the frame).

Finally, rinse thoroughly with clean, soap-free water. You can also use a squeegee with a soft blade to remove any excess water and watermarks from the glass. To go the extra mile, dry the frames with a clean, dry cloth, for a completely streak-free finish. If you decide to use a glass cleaner on the windows, be very careful not to get it on the frames.

Always remember to wash the top floor windows first – otherwise you’ll be dripping dirty water down onto your clean windows below.

For an even brighter shine, you can use a dedicated uPVC polish or restorer after cleaning, but this isn’t usually necessary.

How to clean old and yellow window frames

Sometimes, old uPVC frames can get a yellowed effect. This usually happens because grime and build up accumulate over the years. To clean them effectively, you could try a mixture of white vinegar and water. Alternatively, you could use a dedicated uPVC cleaner and restorer. Always read manufacturer’s instructions carefully before applying any cleaners to your uPVC windows, and if in doubt, just use mild soapy water. However, sadly, you can do very little to prevent older uPVC frames from yellowing. Manufacturers often used lower-quality materials, or years of damage from abrasive cleaners have discoloured them. In this situation, replacement frames would be the only solution.

How often should I clean my uPVC windows?

uPVC became a popular choice when it was introduced as a maintenance-free option to traditional wooden frames (which require a lot of care). Despite this, uPVC frames still need a regular wash to keep them looking fresh and bright. This is mainly because uPVC frames are often white and so dust and dirt visibly builds up on them. This is especially true in towns and cities or on houses next to busy roads. It is recommended that uPVC windows on urban homes get a good clean every three months. For those on rural homes, twice a year should be enough. However, many homeowners prefer more frequent window cleaning. It feels nicer looking outside through clear glass, and cleaner windows will let even more light in.

Once you have cleaned your windows yourself and seen how easy it is, there will be no stopping you. In the future your uPVC double glazed windows will always be gleaming.
